Christophe Bongo’s relationship with football began much like that of many other African children, playing in dusty streets whenever the opportunity arose. He was so engrossed in the beautiful game that he would often forget chores requested by his mother, his youthful exuberance swept up in the rhythm of the ball.

This early passion laid the groundwork for a lifelong dedication to the sport, shaping his journey from a barefoot enthusiast to a celebrated figure in African football on the screen.

FOOTBALL CAREER

His talent was raw and evident from a young age. Before the closure of Lubumbashi University, Christophe earned a spot on the institution’s Under 21 team in 1989, a testament to his speed and skills. The transition to playing with proper football boots came in 1991, during his time at the University of Wits. Despite not being a naturally polished player, coach Terry Paine (MBA) recognised Christophe’s exceptional physical attributes: his size, speed, and raw power.


These qualities were complemented by his These foundational strengths, combined with his unwavering commitment, quickly propelled him forward. By 1992, Christophe was a key selection for the Wits reserve team which was coached by Coach Derick Blackese and John “Black Sunday” Masegela (former Orlando Pirates legend), contributing significantly to their dominance in inter-varsity football in South Africa.
